Went by the lease yesterday and noticed a large number of ducks and even a few specks in the fields. Ducks were mainly teal, pintail and greys with some mallards mixed in but very few. These might be some of the liberated mallards from the released birds south of here. Not sure. Glad to see the specks though!

Finished up the teal season with a couple of birds. All in all a pretty good season. Saw plenty of birds yesterday including pintails and greys. No geese yet which is somewhat unusual for this time of the year. With the start of the first split about six weeks away, we are starting to concentrate on getting blinds and decoy spreads together. Reports from my area, indicates that most hunters did good for this first season. One of my buddies killed an immature albino blue wing teal. Wish he would have taken it during the duck season, maybe it would have been in full plumage.

Our lease had a season total of 100 blue wings for the special teal season. The opening weekend was lights out, limits taken by all hunters and saw thousands of teal, but the number of birds seen and harvested dropped progressively as the season progressed.

Got a call last night from a buddy that hunts flooded rice in Mermentau Cove. Every day since opening they have limited out in the same blind, and he asked if I wanted to go hunt that blind with him. How could I decline? Work becomes secondary when you get an offer like that…. 3 hunters went and ended up with 12 birds by about 7:00 A.M. We saw plenty of birds, but I could tell they were starting to get skittish. I think about 70-80 teal have been killed out of that blind this year, so only mildly smart ones are left.
Happy hunting everyone

No problem Sat. and Sun. for my boy and I. No big bunches but everything was in the dekes. Gotta love the way those blue wingers just swoop right in.

We did well opening day. 4 hunters killed 16 birds by about 8:00 A.M. We saw a lot of ducks, probably 3-5K teal, lots of mottled ducks, and quite a few whistlers.

The actual spot we were in wasn’t great, but you can’t beat the location. There were so many teal in Gueydan you probably could have shot a few right off of La. Hwy.91.

Like you Castille, the reports that I heard from all other hunters were really good. I have a buddy in Morse (South Central) that says they limited out with 10-15 hunters. I have some buddies that did well in Lyons point (South Central) Louisiana.

Well, had good luck for the first two days of teal season. Plenty of birds and from the reports that I am getting, most people had similar results. All Blue wings, no Green. The shooting was fast.

I have been seeing a fair number of blue wing teal between Clarks Marina and Chosatta. Also seen a pretty decent number of teal around bisteneau/bodcau/dorcheat. If someone takes the time to find out the right spot should be wroth hunting(it seems) My hunting partner has seen quite a few teal at Atchfalaya Delta as well. Good Luck, I wont be able to hunt until the 24th of The Month

Went to a few different places this past weekend. Ventured South of Crowley and found about 70-100 Mottled ducks and about 50 Blue wings holed up in a little pond right next to the one we will be hunting….We will probably get a little action there this weekend if we decide to go.
Went and Scouted Sabine Refuge. It is completely different than before Rita. New Marsh everywhere. Didn’t see hardly any ducks though….Probably won’t be hunting there this next weekend.

Will be hitting the dove fields this weekend. Hopefully we will have some doves. Teal season is around the corner, but might need water in our teal pond. Will be hunting with my new lab this season. He seems to be a good one. Will come in handy on cripples. Might watch shell prices, I have heard rumors of price increases coming, so might want to stock up early.

Gettin ready for teal season, less than a month and counting. The numbers are up and there is plenlty of water all over the state. The say, the numbers on bluewing are up 14% over last year and we had plenty last year so we should be good. Now all we are doing is making sure the boats, pirogues,Ginger(our four legged partner), guns and gear are as ready as we are. Good luck hope yall have the time to get yall stuff done.

Finished the season with limits of green wings! That light rain had the teal moving and with a couple of spinners in the pond, didn’t take long! Seems that the spinners really attracts large flights of teal. Well it’s over for another year. An up and down season, with a lull in the middle for us. The rains hurt our goose hunting but the teal made up for it. Hopefully will have my dog for next season. Will keep an eye on our field to see if the geese might not starting feeding in it, and will make a hunt for them but with the high water, probably won’t occur.

Hunted Toledo bend Today and did pretty good on a diver hunt. Limits on Bluebills. Saw lots of big ducks but were set up for the divers. May be to little too late but the ducks are here. Seen several thousand ducks. Toledo is known for its canvasback pop. but of all the ducks I seen today very few were cans. Havent seen this many big ducks in a long time. Headed back for some greenheads tomorrow. Hate that its the last day of season.

Good luck to all.

Hunted over the long weekend and celebrated MLK day by having some good hunts.

Limited out in an hour Sat morning with 2 guns. Killed 10 gray ducks and 2 dos gris. Did the same thing Sunday morning in 1.5 hours. Others that hunted with us killed a few ducks but they need to go to the skeet range….bad! Hunted MLK day but it was bad foggy. Killed one teal and 3 dos gris.

The big front that is moving thru the MS Flyway now has already brought new and many ducks to the area. The closer this weekend should be GREAT for those that have water. The forcast is for a north wind and the tide is scheduled to be at the lowest of the year Saturday morning so ponds that normally have a small amount of water will be mud flats this weekend. This coming weekend is the reason we use airboats in this neck of the woods.

2 man limit of Jacks south out of Clark’s this morning. Plenty of divers, including Cans, to go around. Had to go slumming to get first limit of the season but it sure was nice to get some shots!
BTW, anyone with decoys on the upper end of Black Bayou Hosston, they are now gone!!! Water has come up 4 or 5 feet in the last 2 days. We will be searching the trees. Good thing mine are labeled.
Warning:Do not get on the river before light. There is a very real hazzard with all the floating timber.
Be Safe!!

Finally!!!! Three days and three full limits. The teal were everywhere! Huge flocks flying low around the fields, a beautiful sight to see. Most appeared to be young birds with little body fat and pin feathers, but nevertheless, made for some fanastic shooting. We have all the water we need, so it can quit raining for awhile. Geese are non existent with few flying in the area.

We hunted the Venice area all last week. Tuesday thru Saturday. Had good days and no-so-good days. We averaged about 25 birds a day with 4 or 6 guns each day. Ducks were in all the normal places that had food the first few days when the wind was only 5-10mph. But the winds picked up late in the week and the birds went to protected bays. We killed a few mottled ducks, a lot of GWT, gadwall (but not as many as we expected to kill), a few scaup, lots of pintails, canvasbacks and redheads.

Started seeing new ducks middle of last week, then the rains came and now nothing. Most of the talk I’m hearing is that the deep marshes are holding the majority of the birds. Rita has opened up these marshes and now natural feed plants are thriving, but for us, not much! Geese are starting to take some of the fields around us, so who knows.

Hunting continues to be frustrating, ducks are call and decoy shy, worst I’ve ever seen. We are getting a few early morning teal, spoonbill and grey ducks, mallards and pintail ignore decoys and calling, land in the middle of the fields where you can’t reach them. Still, the worst duck hunt I’ve ever been on was great!

Hunted 12/23, 12/24 & 12/26. 12/23 had 2 woodducks, 3 teal, 2 greys and 4 mallards. 12/24 3 pintail, 5 teal, 1 grey and 9 mallards. 12/26 scratched. Seems as if the ducks left when the weather cleared up yesterday. Guess we’ll have to wait for another rainy day to kill some ducks. Geese moved real high today in large groups and wouldn’t work at all.

Found a hole with hundreds of wood ducks. From 4:15 pm to sunset we were covered up with wood ducks. There were so many that it confused me and my 2 hunting partners as to which one to shoot at. Needless to say we got our limit of wood ducks. It was fast and furious action for fun quick shooting. Agreat hunt to practice and hone my shoting skills. They fly like jet fueled rockets if they do not decoy. We also bagged some redheads and green wing teal earlier that morning. The mallards were few and far between. We got a few stragglers to work, but would not decoy. I am still waiting for the BIG push of mallards in the spillway.

Well I may have to ammend my previously positive statement. I returned to the AGFC and read the updated comments, as of yesterday. It looks like what I thought were migrating ducks were actually newly banded birds. They had just been captured and fitted with transmitters. At least we will be able to follow them from here.

Good Luck Anyway!

Boys, I don’t normally get excited about hunting when the weather is this warm but that was before I started watching the Satellite Mallards on the AGFC website.
I pulled the site for the first time on 12-05 hoping that the cold weather would force a push and that this site would show that result, but the furthest duck south was still north of the Arkansas river (central Ark.).Expecting a reverse migration I was surprised 3 days ago when I saw that 2 hens were located due east of Texarkana and another 3 north on the Arkansas river, poised to move down.
I pulled it this morning and the 2 by Texarkana became 4. Migration in 70 degree weather, go figure. They are now moving down the Red River corridor(within a few miles either side). You would have to assume that these previously 2 mallards now 4 represent a much larger group of migrating mallards.
We north Louisianna hunters have found ourselves grasping for any good news over the last 5 years, so hopefully this is some. Tomorrow morning will tell the tale.

Good Luck!
