Cloudy, High Winds – 45-50 Degrees
Hunted Friday thru Monday. 24 bird limits each day 75% gwt with a few mallards, pintail and greys mixed in. Sunday we saw thousands of new ducks migrating into SW Louisiana so hopefully the rest of the season will be great. Geese are not moving at all.

Three great days of hunting. The teal have returned and have given us some fast shooting! Mostly Green wing but with a few Blue wings, it has been fun! Now what the last week with all the weather changes offers in something else!

Finally!!!! Three days and three full limits. The teal were everywhere! Huge flocks flying low around the fields, a beautiful sight to see. Most appeared to be young birds with little body fat and pin feathers, but nevertheless, made for some fanastic shooting. We have all the water we need, so it can quit raining for awhile. Geese are non existent with few flying in the area.

3 hunters–18 ducks, 3 specks & 11 snows. 3 pintail, 6 mallards, 8 teal & 1 grey. Lots of new ducks came in from the north from around 8 am to around 10 am. Hopefully they will hang around for awhile.

We hunted the Venice area all last week. Tuesday thru Saturday. Had good days and no-so-good days. We averaged about 25 birds a day with 4 or 6 guns each day. Ducks were in all the normal places that had food the first few days when the wind was only 5-10mph. But the winds picked up late in the week and the birds went to protected bays. We killed a few mottled ducks, a lot of GWT, gadwall (but not as many as we expected to kill), a few scaup, lots of pintails, canvasbacks and redheads.

Started seeing new ducks middle of last week, then the rains came and now nothing. Most of the talk I’m hearing is that the deep marshes are holding the majority of the birds. Rita has opened up these marshes and now natural feed plants are thriving, but for us, not much! Geese are starting to take some of the fields around us, so who knows.

Hunting continues to be frustrating, ducks are call and decoy shy, worst I’ve ever seen. We are getting a few early morning teal, spoonbill and grey ducks, mallards and pintail ignore decoys and calling, land in the middle of the fields where you can’t reach them. Still, the worst duck hunt I’ve ever been on was great!

Hunted 12/23, 12/24 & 12/26. 12/23 had 2 woodducks, 3 teal, 2 greys and 4 mallards. 12/24 3 pintail, 5 teal, 1 grey and 9 mallards. 12/26 scratched. Seems as if the ducks left when the weather cleared up yesterday. Guess we’ll have to wait for another rainy day to kill some ducks. Geese moved real high today in large groups and wouldn’t work at all.
