Cloudy, Rain & Thunderstorms – 50-60 Degrees
What a day to find out my water proof rain jacket isn’t. I saw teal and mallards. Passed on one flock right at shooting light because I couldn’t tell hens from drakes. Ended up getting soaked and quit before I really wanted to. Never fired a shot.

Took out 2 youth hunters this morning saw one good bunch of geese, they decoyed awesome after the smoke cleared 3 geese on the ground 2 very happy youths and to put on the frosting 2 of three birds had jewelry on the legs and each harvested a band. The coolest thing of all was one was a first goose for the young man how cool is that!!Even without the band it would have made a impression, just adds another body to the list of monsters we become!!

Rio Grande County 09-18-2007 19:29

Guys, I am coming to Colorado to a friend’s ranch in Rio Grande County on October 15 to trout fish for a few days. My buddy is not much of a hunter, but I did some homework and found out that it is duck season while I am there. Now I am really fired up for some “cast and blast” on this trip. I also discovered that some of the upland birds are in season such as grouse, chukkar and ptarmigan. The problem is that when it comes to upland birds I don’t know what to expect since my buddy is a novice at wingshooting. Are any of you familiar with the area and can you give me some idea of what to expect this time of year? BY the way, the Rio Grande runs right through the middle of the property. Thanks!

First chance to get out for Teal was this morning……Lots of birds in the Ramah area…..also lots of skybusting going on…..for the umpteenth year in a row, heard lots of shooting well before legal shooting light.

On the plus side, wound up with 3 birds by 0900 (all blue wing) shoulda had a limit but some poor shooting on my part sent me home 1 short.

Beautiful morning, topped off by some excellent dog work….Can’t wait for the big duck opener!

went dove hunting and had a piss poor shoot. The doves are still around, but since there is an abundance of food the doves are scattered and not grouped up. And since there is an abundance of food there is no est. flight path. So maybe this cold front will bunch the birds up. who knows.

Hunted the first two days of the teal opener, and had success both days although not hot and furious as in the past. Both days landed good numbers of big ducks and that always gets the juices flowing.Shot all bluewings as expected, and passed a shot because of mixed in shovelers yesterday. Even had a pair of pintails land this morning, with a drake that could be picked out that was cool.Watch out for the shoveloaders, good luck.BY THE WAY, I KNOW THERE ARE OTHERS OUT THERE BECAUSE I HEARD YOUR SHOOTING,POST UP FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! ALSO HAVE THE DOVES VANISHED OR IS IT JUST ME AND THE SPOTS I’M LOOKIN???
