Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
How’s everyones summer going. I’m new to the vfe and will be letting eveyone know whats happen’n in northeast ga. I hunt around carnesville, lavonia, hartwell lake.
Also provide guide service (huntprooutfitters.com) in ne ark. and nw missouri. Right know all swamps in the area are dry as a bone, so doing alot of planting for the season. Have seen some sightings on lake hartwell. Lots of geese with some ducklings also. The doctors place has been planted as well. During the hunting season best hunts are around the darn, and behind it in the river. Lots of coves. When the doc. shots the lake and river become loaded. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any ?. Thanks

No new or malingering migrators. Some resident goslings, about 4-6.

was on the lake all day memorial day and saw tons of birds. geese everywhere with plenty of youngens in tow. even saw several groups of fresh mallard broods. of course the local osprey and eagle population was already doing their best to thin it down.

Mr. Wing Master
Funny you should mention it but Lake Windward is where i saw the flock. I love the lake and saw a good bit of waterfowl around. The dozer is hurting us as far as birds go. I have been saying for years that the growth in Atlanta has can’t keep up but have been proved wrong thus far.
As a side note to everyone, saw a wood duck drake paired up with a hen mallard the other day. Saw them for 2 days straight and he was running off other mallard suitors so there was little doubt that they were paired. Should lead to some cool hybrids.

Paul, I have lived in Windward since 1985 and have the pleasure of watching migratory waterfowl come and go from time to time on Lake Windward.
It is not uncommon to see blue winged teal or blue bills from time to time and during winter time black ducks aalong with migratory mallards. There is a huge flooded timber area here that was created when Golf Club of Georgia built the golf course and it is an awsome sight to see the incredible number of ducks pitching into it in the evening. looks like Arkansas.
Big Creek which drains Forsyth & N’Fulton passes through Windward and eventually dumps into the Hooch below Roswell. It has beeb a flyway for eons. Before development encroached on the area I was able to shoot a limit of ducks easily in one of several honey holes within 10 minutes of the house, Woodcock also use it & quail covies could be found off McFarland Rd, nearby. Unfortunately the massive numbers of Wood Ducks that used to call Big Creek home have dwindled down from flocks of 40 to 50 in the late 80’s to flocks of 5 to 10. Tis a sad indictment on developments around the area as both commercial and residential development have devasted lots of the wetlands around this Drainage basin. The Bulldozer is and always has been a predator and when they go through the habitat is gone forever and so it is with Big Creek with a few small potholes and semi flooded ares for the birds left.
We fought it here in Windward as long as we could and luckily made some changes but we couldn’t impact the areas outside of Windward.

A fellow hunter reported 5 woodduck ducklings wandered into his backyard without parents and none in sight. Headed to rehab….the ducklings, that is.
