Migration Update – February 23, 2011

With the snow line receding to the 42nd parallel, snow goose numbers have increased dramatically in Missouri, Nebraska and southern Illinois over the past week. With another round of snow piling up in the northern states, light geese are expected to hold in popular hunting areas until the next thaw begins.

Hello folks, and, as always, welcome to Waterfowler.com.

The quick spring thaw ignited light goose activity was met by another taste of winter and accumulating snow in the northern parts of the Central and Mississippi Flyways. The additional snow pack will provide an insurance policy against a quick Canadian escape for light geese over the next few weeks and the excellent hunting in Missouri, Nebraska, and Illinois will continue until the thaw. Light goose numbers are slowly increasing in southern Iowa and hunter success is expected to improve over the next week.

After a season of perfect storms that fueled a near perfect ducks season in the Central and Mississippi Flyways this past autumn, the trends thus far this spring appear to be providing the best possible conditions for a record harvest. Hunters and guide services are reporting excellent numbers along the snow line and increased numbers of juvenile birds. Expectations and hunter success are high at this time and many are predicting this will be the best spring season on record.

Weather predictions for the coming week indicate the possibility for severe spring storms in Tornado Alley. Hunter should take precautions when heading to the field, as these spring storms can often be violent and dangerous. Flash flooding, dangerous winds and tornados are expected and many areas and hunters are advised to use common sense when making decisions when heading to the field.

Until our next report, hunt safe and hunt often.
