Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 35-40 Degrees
Scouted this place yesterday afternoon and saw around 50 ducks with atleast 6 geese.

Got there this morning and jumped geese and ducks off of it. Apparently they are using it as a roost.

I was picky with my shots and dropped a drake widgeon and drake gadwall with 1 shot apiece.

I watched alot of ducks work. Passed on several ringnecks.

All in all it was a good hunt!!

Ready to shoot a deer or 2 this weekend!

Yes, we need to. Maybe best to wait until after the holidays, second half? I know we hunt the same area anyway so should be easy.

I was curious if anyone was interested in doing a group hunt this year. I have been on this website since 2002, and have never hunted with any of you. So, I wanted to see if we could all get together(even the lurkers).

What do ya’ll think?

Hunted this morning. Had a group of 4 gadwalls come in just after LST. Shot 1 time and missed. I did see several birds flying, but all seemed to be heading south of me. Managed to kill a young drake gadwall and that was it.

what a difference a day makes. Sunday we saw a few, shot at one, got none.

I did find some more birds Sunday evening, but back at work today.

Ducks are showing up, but the distribution seems spotty. One or two ponds holding good numbers, the rest almost none.

Finally made SODAK, holing up here for a few days to shoot pheasants. Just had the best hunt of all time in the North. Birds were extremely hard to get on as it was hot and the crop conditions were not very good, however, once we got under them, HOLY COW. Was another wonderful year in Canada.

OK, um so, shot a few last weekend. Not nearly the number of birds as in the past, but I get reports that the numbers have been up the past few days.

Just got back from Wyoming last night. Took a doe antelope and a very average mule deer. Still it was my first mulie, so I has happy with it.

Still the big story is that 30 minutes into opening day I had an easy shot at a really huge whitetail. I’m talking 150 in buck, split G2 and G3. Deer of a lifetime. I hesitated thinking I came all this was to kill a mulie. Didn’t shoot. Never saw a mulie half as big. Oh well……..

Went 4 for 6 this morning!! First bird dropped in around 6:45 and was dropped with the bottom barrel. About a minute later unloaded both barrels and had two more tits up. Had to wait about 5 minutes and had 2 come buzz the dekes. Two more shots rang out, but birds kept going. Then those 2 birds merged with 4 others and after a couple of passes, they decoyed. 1 more shot finished out my limit. Dog retrieved nicely. Can’t wait for tomorrow!!!

How did everyone else do?

Well decent weather this weekend, but I am glad February is over! What a crappy month. I went out today to take down a duckblind I built of burlap and a conduit fram. It was sweet blind, but the big blow on Christmas Eve destroyed it. Not a strait piece of pipe left. Did catch a few bass and throw some marks for the dog. I finally got the dog to not chase my lure, but when I throw the fish back in, he goes in after them. Funny a time or two, then just annoying.

Don’t have much going yet Mingo. For sure gonna chase some turkeys this spring if I can find a place or two. Might end up buying an over the counter doe antelope tag or two for Wyoming and making a trip up there in Sep. Not sure about the fall as far as birds go. Last couple of years I have went to CO and hunted with Mike and Damon. But I am going on the Argentina 2011 trip and will need to save my vacation time next Jan.

And yes, for some reason I still check these boards every day…lol!!

Agreed.

I doubt anybody is ever going to post up, “man, I killed all the ducks I wanted, and I’m glad the season is over.”

I think about the old days when I was a kid. Maybe make a dozen hunts. Usually end up cold and wet and kill about a dozen ducks all season. Looking at a mallard hen in the decoys when they were 100 points, wonderin’ what to do. I like these days just fine.

It’s over and I am not sure yet how it went! I can clearly state that a little shooting practice is much needed! Yet another year of Oklahoma waterfowling is put in the record books, hope all had fun, hope all enjoyed the wonderful outdoors God has so richly blessed us all with and I certainly hope all had the chance to take a child out so as to further this great experience we all love so much. I’m gonna go cry now as the realization hits that I have to wait forever before going duck hunting again!!!

Pretty good closer for us; cold, snow and fog. We got a few groups in and they all wanted right on the decoys. We ended up with three Mallards and 10 Gadwall; bless those grey ducks!

In the end it was a decent season. Probably killed fewer ducks but still good numbers. It just seemed like we had fewer of those really good days when four or five limit could be killed. February is never pretty, but we will be fishing before too long. We all made it through with no injuries to man or dogs and no major equipment breakage, although my shooting was still the same!

Conditions weren’t good this morning. Had open water yesterday, but everything except a small patch or 2 was froze. Didn’t see anything flying. Lucked out and had 3 gadwalls land on the ice around 8am. Killed one of those. Escaped the skunk atleast. I had a better than average season and I’m sorry that it’s over. Well, got an invite to hunt with a guy I had met and hunted with once and a few of his friends on a nice big watershed. Birds worked well but were not too numerous. We were spread out around the lake and our station of two ended up with four Gadwall and a Canvasback. Total was twelve birds, a pretty good late season shoot. Hope we don’t get iced out of the last weekend!

Kind of typical late season hunt today. Got a flurry of activity just a little after LST and shot 10, then picked off a few more singles over the rest of the morning. Ended up with 15, only saw a couple of small groups that did not come in. Ducks seem to be spread out with a few here and there. I’m guessing it will be that way until the end of the season.

went out Tuesday afternoon, found 400+ greenies feeding in a sheetwater field, thought it was for sure deal the next day so I rounded up the troops and we went in. Got set up EXACTLY where they had been the night before and waited. LST came and we heard suzie quacking 200 yds away, I got up and went to flush her to keep the birds coming right, little did I know suzie had 200 buddies with her. They had roosted in 4″ water! We stayed until 1300 hours and killed 6 but it was a major disappointment. Oh these strange and mysterious creatures we chase.

Kinda nice to have a “normal” hunt today. No ice and no freezing your tail off. Started off with a small group of Wigeon, and then in turned into a dog show. Normally we will lay off the Ringnecks somewhat, but today that was about all we had and this close to the end, they did not get a free pass. It was fun shooting while it lasted, but it ended around 8:30 with 2 Wigeon, 1 Spoonie and 10 Jacks!

At LST we were covered up with birds, but still couldn’t see well enough to shoot because of the fog. Finally could see well enough and started of with 2 birds. We shot horribly, but the birds kept coming in throughout the morning. Ended up with 13 gadwalls with 3 guns. Should have shot a 3 man limit, but we shot very bad. I was very surprised how many ducks were flying with the heavy fog and virtually no wind. All in all, it was a very good morning!!!

Just back from the Sooner state. I have come to realize that I have truly missed duck hunting there. I was stationed at Ft Sill in the mid 90’s and really enjoyed the waterfowling the area had to offer. All I have to say about this trip is, “wow”!! I really feel foolish for waisting my time and money going anywhere else after our season closes here in Iowa. Thank you Oklahoma for making this season better than what it would have been had I not gone.

been all over with the Atlanta boys fo rthe last 4 days. Killed 6 geese and 15 ducks on day one, killed 24 ducks on day 2, 10 or so on day 3 and 23 today. We have had to travel all over and scout and scout and scout to find them, every day we hunt big water in the boat that particular water would freeze by the next day and we would have to find them again. All my normal haunts are hard frozen so we are learning new lakes, new spots and having a ball. I’m tired, think i’ll take tomorrow off and go to church where I belong! Besides that, nothing I own is functional anymore. Cold weather is hard on boats, batteries, guns, dogs and humans.

good luck all

Just about finished setting up this morning, right at LST, still had the truck lights shining over the pond and one duck came in and landed on the ice. That was the only one that came close. We did see quite a few going down on a sewer lagoon nearby, and some standing on the ice on another pond. If we get a thaw this week, we may get some decent hunting.

OK,here’s some scuttlebutt and results of scouting. As of Sunday, heard rumors of good numbers of ducks in west central OK. I also hear they are killing some on Cobb. On the local ponds, if you can find water, there are some ducks. Most of the smaller ponds are frozen today, but any with a small spot of open water had some. Mostly Gadwall and a few Mallards. I am thinking this cold snap will freeze all the ponds by this weekend.

Just about useless in this part of the state, the snow has them all gone. Even with open water we are only seeing a few birds on the holes. It would appear the entire NE section is done until the snow is gone. Ducks seen hammering a field one day are gone the next.
