Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Actually found a pond this morning with some open water. There were a few geese and ducks that roosted there overnight so we had high hopes that we were in the right spot. Maybe we were, but it didn’t pan out. We got one flock of Gadwall and cut three to go with a single Gaddie and a single Mallard. Other than a fly by from some jacks that was it. There are a few ducks around but it seems that many have moved on, probably due to the ice and also that the area we hunt does not have much for food sources other than aquatic vegetation.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 10-20 Degrees – Ice
Frozen up this morning, but the ice wasn’t too thick. Made a small hole and set a half dozen. Had a good group of Gadwall in about 15 minutes past LST and cut 5. Much later had a pair come in and got both. No ducks flying, but did see about a dozen land on a frozen pond and just stand around. Looks like we are going to fight the ice for a while.

I’ve been all over and the dux have left the building. got frusterated and went to KS and chased quail and pheasant for 2 days not I’m back in the saddle. I have one friend that hunts Eufala, he called yesterday and said the lake was loaded up but all big rafts in the middle. If you look at the snow cover map it shows thats about where the snow stops. Looks like i’ll be heading south!

Holy Cow!! This place has exploded with activity. Can’t help you guys much as I don’t hunt big water. I can tell you from my work travels, that like Mingo said, the ponds are still frozen for the most part. Most big water that I have seen is open. I am not seeing alot of ducks. I think they hopped on that north wind that brought the blizzard in and are drinking Coronas in Mexico right now.

Sorry guys, I don’t really know. The ponds around here are still frozen so I would guess the shallow backwater areas of most lakes are also.

I don’t hunt Eufala and haven’t heard any reports from there, so it’s either been good and no one is talking or it’s not good. At any rate our numbers have been fair at best so without scouting its a crap shoot. I would guess that there is some open water on bigger lakes now and that they are holding decent numbers of birds.

One other question for you Mingo- anyone ever hunt Eufala any more? A person does not hear much about that area anymore.

Will a person be able to launch a boat? Maybe a better question would be how thick is the ice?

LR,

They don’t plant the peanuts around Cobb as in the past and the birds numbers are not as good. Last I heard the field hunting was not good, but they were killing some Mallards at the lake. Pretty easy for one or two guys to kill limits. I don’t know about Ellsworth. We had a pretty wet year and all the ponds and lakes around central OK are full. Don’t know if the Lawton area got as much water. The few ponds I have checked SW of here are lower than other areas. We have had cold weather in the last few weeks and most all the ponds are frozen over.

Hey Oklahoma fellas, I was stationed down at Ft Sill in the mid 90s and hunted lake Ellsworth and Ft Cobb. Is there enough water in Ellsworth to still motor in the north end and is Ft Cobb as good as it always was? We used to kill peanut filled mallards by the dozens off of Ft cobb. Planning a trip in the next week or so but you couple three are the only ones out there. Hope to hear back from you.

Most ponds are frozen over, but at least the roads are decent. We have been hitting the one pond we have with open water and it has been paying off. Urban shot a quick limit off it yesterday so we hit it again today. Ducks were roosted on the pond, but we still had some in just a little early. Started off quick right at LST with a Gadwall, then we got a nice flight right in the decoys and took 5, all spoonies! It slowed quite a bit, but we continued picking up a few Gadwall and one Mallard drake. We needed five more for three limits when we got a flight of Cans and took three, two of which were crippled and took a long time to track down. These ducks would dive and swim at least 50 yards under before showing just the tops of their heads. We finally got them all up leaving us just two short when we got eight more ducks in the decoys, All Canvasback again! We called it quits then.

Made it out at about 11:30. Shot a limit of gadwalls. Couldn’t believe the weather!! Made for some easy shots though with the ducks just hovering over the water. Hopefully the wind will keep the water open for what should be an awesome hunt in the morning!!

We just thought the weather was bad this morning. Rain eased just enough to convince us to set up, then started again. Soon after the ducks showed and man did they want in. Oddly for us we shot pretty good in the high winds and rain. Ended up just a few short of four limits before nine when the rain finally got through the outer layers and we went for eggs and bacon. Slow ride back with lots of cars in the ditch. Be careful out there!

Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – 40-45 Degrees
We hit the right spot today. Started slow with singles and pairs again, but managed to get most of what came in. We had a brief flurry of ducks around 8:30 and nearly doubled our number. The wind shifted and we had to move the decoys a little, but we still had the wind mostly in our faces which made for going away shooting but we still managed to peck away and get to 21, just short of four limits. Just about half and half with Gadwall and Wigeon, with one Greenhead and one Redhead in the mix.

Numbers have been slowly improving this week. Hope this weather helps us out.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Well the boys are at it again. Nephews Matt and Wyatt called me frantic with duxs yesterday late morn. Found em and got permission to hunt so it was on. We shot 33 mallards and would have killed more if the younguns could shoot as good as they can scout!!! They were eating beans and we hit em on a farm pond next to the bean field. I just love my nephews!!!

In some ways is was back to the usual. Had some ducks early, but it shut off pretty quickly to just singles and pairs every thirty minutes or so. We had been shooting mostly Gadwall and Ringers with a few Wigeon and sometimes a Mallard to two. Today of the 11 we shot it was two GWT, one Wigeon and the rest Mallards, except for the sweet Pintail Drake the newbie shot. Quantity was not great, but the quality was! It seems like there are more ducks west of I-35 than we have here in central OK. It doesn’t look like that is going to change anytime soon.

Didn’t see a lot this morning. Had a few in the dekes before legal. Heard some yahoos to the north shooting way early and our birds got up and left. Not much flying to speak of. We got some doubles and singles in and made the best of it. Ended up with 6 ducks and 1 goose. The goose should not have made another pass after we missed with the first 5 shots!!!

Me and a buddy made a quick hunt before work today. Lots of birds in right before LST. After we got them up, several came back. We ended up with 5 gadwalls, 2 widgeon and 1 lost drake pintail!! First ever pintail I have ever shot. Birds shut it down pretty quick but that was probably due to not very many hunters out this morning to keep them moving.

Got second hand invite to go with a group SW of Norman today. We hit a watershed that was covered with geese and ducks. We waited til most had left and then set up. Couldn’t get the geese in, but ended up just a few birds shy of 6 limits of Mallards. Man, I wish I knew why the Mallards are hanging out just west of where we hunt. Shot more today than we have all season.

Funny how quickly things returned to normal. We had a big group in the decoys 10 minutes before LST, so we had high hopes. But it ended up being a morning like many others this year. All singles and pairs that would give one good pass or land just a little outside the decoys. The wind did shift a little which put it quartering toward us and that didn’t help. We ended up with 4 Gadwall and 1 Mallard.

Hunted big water on saturday, killed 9 all kinds, enough of the smaller holes had opened up to push the birds around to them. Upon scouting the place earlier they were all on the big water. Sunday found us in a bean field on public land, we trudged a million miles packing a huge ground rig and then slugging through 150 yards of ankle deep mud. MAN the ducks were there. we set up and 10 minutes before LST we landed at least 200 and had 2500 more setting in. 5 minutes before the morons that walked 10 feet from their truck and hunted the edges started shooting just to keep them from landing on us. At first I thought they did not know we were out in the middle, but soon we opened up and told them for sure, of course, this made no difference to the losers as they kept right on all morning everytime we had birds cupped and gliding they would shoot and pick them up. We ended up with 13 mallards but would have had 25 had we not had to contend with the morons. Oh how I love hunting public!!! Birds are here and now its summertime again so maybe they will stay a bit.

12/12 We had good numbers early, the birds seemed to want to get down, but the ice had them a little hesitant. Ended up with 5 between 3 of us, but that is only because of very poor shooting.

12/13 Not as many birds and Sat due to the heavy fog but we made the shots count today and ended up with 5 birds.

I know that I was seeing a lot of birds early in the week, but I think once we got froze up for those couple of days we lost a bunch of birds.

Well, we found a little patch of open water in a large pond holding ducks yesterday, and today they showed up in good numbers. We took four limits of mostly Gadwall and GWT and were done by 9 am. Most of the small ponds are still frozen, but it looks like the ducks are here.

I second Mingo’s notion. We found almost the exact results. We went goose hunting saturday and were hunting in a wheat field next to my duck hole. The ducks we saw come into that hole were weary and would circle 8 or 10 times before commiting and that was with noone hunting! We did manage to fool some big geese and shot 4 of them on the one volley we had. We also noticed large groups of snows heading south yesterday. Hopefully, this artic front will bring some in.

Well, the first half is in the books and for me is was just OK.

Yesterday hit a small pond that had about 20 on it earlier in the week. The morning we hunted only three came by and we killed them all. Don’t know why more didnt come as this pond had not been hunted all year. It just seems like the ducks know what we are up to.

Today we had better results. Don’t know how big a part the weather played, but did see some large groups of Snows moving south. Slow but steady action on Mallard, Gadwall, Teal and Jacks resulted in a bag of 16 for three guns. Had a good number of lookers that wouldn’t come in range, but nearly all we took came right in to the decoys. It’s just been a little strange.

All those years of taking the young uns paid off today. I had not found much to hunt in my haunts and had just about settled into this morning being a scouting morning, then my nephew Wyatt called me up and informed me he found some ducks and had gotten permission to hunt them. He told me there were 2 to 3 hundred Grey ducks on a farrm pond near his home. Well I had nothing better so we gave it a whirl this morning with Matt one of my other nephews. I set the deks out right where he spotted the birds. LST came and within 10 minutes we had 18 and were pickin up. Amazingly, every single bird was a Gaddy. We gave each other high 5’s and all went to the local diner for some bacon! It was a real treat to see these young men not only find jerk and master scout it, but proceed to out shoot the old man!!!

Had a good shoot this morning with 3 guns taking 14 birds; mostly Gadwall with a few Wigeon and one Mallard.

The wind was actually wrong for our set up, but this caused the birds to come over our backs and hover over the pond trying to find a way to get down. This made for some pretty easy shooting. The birds seemed to have trouble getting up speed to get out and many broke back over us. We even dropped a few behind the dam. A few fresh ducks seem to be trickling in, but they are not easy. You gotta be hid, still and take your shot at the first good chance.

Same crew, different pond, fewer ducks. Had three Wigeon come in and leave before LST, then we got a pair of Gadwall and took both. We did not see more than 10 ducks all morning.

Labs, I noticed the same thing yesterday, with ducks on their way somewhere else. It almost seemed like late season stale ducks. There are just not very many ducks in this area and lots of water for them to chose from.

Well here we go; about like I expected, some ducks but not a lot. We saw a fair number of ducks but many of those had someplace else to go, probably as a result of all the rain we have gotten. If any worked close the decoyed pretty well. Surprisingly, our shooting wasn’t too bad and most that came in we got. Of course that was also due to the fact that they were mostly in groups of four or less. We ended up with a mixed bag of Gadwall, Wigeon and Mallard with a total bag of 11 for 5 guns.

I made a short scouting trip today. The ponds are all in good shape and bank full from the rains we have had. Most have some flooded grass at the edges and some have good amounts of Pondweed, Smartweed and aquatic vegetation. I saw a few Ringnecks on one pond and fair numbers of Gadwall on two others. It looks like habitat conditions will be good for the first half, we just need some more ducks. I have heard reports of fair numbers of ducks in the NW and western parts of the state.

I hear some ducks are beginning to show up in NW OK. Probably just a rumor.

Well, there is almost no water in SE Wyoming except the North Platte River and a few lakes. Saw a few Wigeon and divers on the Platte. Drove through SW Nebraska on the way home along the Platte and saw very few ducks. I have no idea what that means, BUT, I did shoot a nice Antelope!
