Cloudy, Occassional Rain Showers – Over 70 Degrees
Well the dove season opened this weekend for our zone. My son and i hunted saturday and ended up with a limit fairly easy. My son managed to kill one dove that was banded. It looked young so it probably was a local bird. I will update later when he gets his certificate back. It was a 1800- bird band. As for ducks i did see some teal flying around early saturday morning but nothing trying to land on our holes. Did see a fair amount of woodducks also. Hope the weather cools off quickly. Looking forward to a great waterfowl season. Hope everyone has a great season and looking forward to reading everyone’s posts.

Blue winged teal are starting to filter into the delta and i’ve allready seen a few around hattiesburg. Dove season is to open within the next few days in the north zone and the southern zone later on in sept. The Waterfowl seasons are set and can be found on the MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES WEB SITE. For those of you hunting doves within the next few days be sure to watch the snakes!!!! Looking forward to everyone’s reports.

Hunted for one last time saturday for sob’s. Took caleb and todd a couple of great guys from mississippi state. We set up on a wheat field and watched a ton of geese fly by to a wheat field 1 mile away. The field we were in held the same geese friday but they didn’t seem to want to come back into the same field on saturday. We did manage to scratch out a few and ended up with 13. Only 1 adult bird. Most of the birds acted like they had been hunted for years. We did make a few errors and should have ended up with more but that’s the way snow goose hunting is. I hope some day we can use e-callers during the regular season. If you have a chance to hunt these birds i hope you take advantage of it. They keep increasing in population every year. I have heard that if the population doesn’t get under control that they might end up spraying the birds with a chemical or allowing the locals to harvest more eggs in order to control them. I just hope before they go to those drastic measures that they give us a chance to use e-callers over all white decoys like they do in canada. Then they can see if the population come’s under control before they use other means of control.

well ended the season on a couple of good hunts. Saturday 4 of us bagged 4 mallards and 7 smiling mallards and 7 teal. We also killed 4 scaup and 1 hen canvasback. We had one juv. blue goose fly too close and finished the bag with him.

Sunday brought promise with a ton of new birds moving into our area. We killed 8 mallards, 1 gadwall and 7 teal, 8 scaup. Not bad to end the last day with a mixture limit. When we got ready to leave we had a couple of mallards give us a high swing and killed the greenhead out of it. He ended up being banded. Which gave us a total of 2 bands this year.

Monday we tried to film the mississippi outdoors and ended up shooting a 9 snows and blues. We have not had many geese on our lease or even around us this year. We did have a couple of small bunches moving early yesterday and ended up with a few.

The snow and blue goose conservation season runs from january 29th till febuary 2nd. It then closes for the youth waterfowl weekend hunt. Then it re-opens monday febuary 5th till march 10th. You need to call in for a conservation # from the wildlife and fisheries. You can use unplugged shotguns during this season and also have the aid of electronic callers during these seasons.
Help save the tundra by reducing the numbers of these birds if your able.

Also doug and drew the alabama boys had a couple of good shoots also at our lease on another hole the shot close to their limits on 3 out of the 4 days.

All in all it was a decent year but not by any means a banner year, which we had hoped for. Next year brings promise as the birds are just arriving to our state. Help out in any way possible to help promote our waterfowl hunting.

Hope all had a good and safe year.

Till my next post.

Season ended strong, got in a ton more shooting with more birds in the area. Finished up with what I liked to say was a strong finish to a schitty season.

All and all, our kill numbers were way down for the year. I would give up 2 weeks on the front end of duck season for an extra 7 days in the South. Cold weather alone can’t get the ducks down here, we need 3 feet of snow to cover up the food north. Weather is calling for wintery mix mid week for north MS. Wish we had it in December

All in all the last 5 days were very good!We limited out thursday by 8.15am.All Mallards with 5 gadwalls.

Friday was good also killed limit of mallards early with 6 specks. The bonus were the 2 Canadians that came into decoys as well.

Saturday was good also.Yesterday didn’t limit out but shot 8 mallards at 20-25 yds early before the winds were howling.

The weather will put ducks everywhere now.I hear that Delta Waterfowl is proposing a new later season for us in the south.

That would really help alot.

CIM

I also have some pits and fields available for next year also.Prices range from $3250-$5250 depending on what you are looking for.

Leases deposits are due by March 31st and we close them by Oct 1st.

Water is put in your field at no extra cost whether we pump or catch rain water.

sorry haven’t been posting lately. Lost my father in law a couple of days ago. Anyways we have been hunting some woodducks and have been doing fair the last few days. We also have been shooting a few hoodeds. Reports from our lease in the delta is a few geese and some ducks around. Doug and drew have had a couple of decent shoots and deadly danny shot a few geese during the last week. It is hot one day and cold the next which leads a person to wonder if we are getting new birds with the fronts. All in all this has been a fair year. We need this kind of weather early to mid december with it holding throughout the month of january. Most of the birds are holding in missouri and northern arkansas from reports that i’ve gotten. I hope we can get in one last push before the season ends. Maybe this cold front will push some much needed birds into mississippi for this last weekend.

good luck to all

5 limits of fats this morning. Found them in a little slough we found last weekend. Held back the urge to bull rush them last weekend, glad we waited. 20 greenheads the rest Greys and Woodies, all killed by 9 a.m.

Found a new hole where they were pouring in late this morning, we got a surprise for them in the morning.

This is the HUGE flight of new birds we saw last Sunday. Last couple of weekends should be great if we can stay on them and find there hinding spots.

Pics to follow…..

We are seeing a few more ducks since this cold weather snaps, but not in the numbers we need to close out the season to meet expectations. My guess is that every field in the delta will be full of ducks…. around Feb. 1st.

Last weekend we saw better hunts and started reaching limits but we shouldn’t be killing teal in Jan. but when it’s in the 60’s, we’ll shoot what we can get. Fingers crossed for this last cold front to push new ducks, we are holding ducks but they are the same ones that have been here a month and they are getting smarter by the day.

I hunted from last thursday till yesterday morning.Im glad someone has seen some new ducks we haven’t.I stayed over till yesterday morning and I watched the same birds do the same things for the last several weeks. They were sitting in a newly flooded green wheat field.About 2.5 inches of rain water in it.This time last year I was hammering the birds. Why?Because there were new birds in our area.

We continue to not have a major migration since before Christmas.Which we killed 137 birds in 5 days.

I usally hunt my big rice field with 450 decoys and I am now down to 20.They still flair won’t work the hole. These birds have been there along time. This same rice field was totally eaten out by Jan 10th last year still stubble and rice everywhere this year.

I have several fields that have not had a bird in it all year and have not even been hunted. We need to face it we just don’t get the Migration that we used to get.

In the future I may start looking to the North…My buddies in Illonois and Missouri have hammered them all year long.

I pick up my decys every week and it still doesn’t help.

Time for some changes in my Duck Hunting strategies..

Hunted DNF on Saturday, limits of greenheads and Greyducks. A little slower on Sunday as we tried to hunt the same hole twice. I knew better but we were tired from the walk in on Saturday and did not go scout a new hole for Sunday.

We did see hundreds and hundreds of new birds arriving on Sunday. All Mallards and all hitting DNF. Should be a good last two weeks.

Check out pictures in the gallery.

We did get the occasional bufflehead and managed to scratch out two. One fullplumage male that is going to the taxidermist. It doesnt look like I have been missing much.

I believe the major migration is way behind this year.It is a very tough season. There are some birds but they are spread out everywhere. To much rain and to many warm days. The ducks are just not where they need to be.

I hope that the last 3 weeks improve.Im sick of warm, rainy hot days.We have to get some weather North of us to get a push. The birds in our area (know the game). You find a spot where they are holding and they dont come back when you pressure them.I hope it improves.

Bad weather, bad migration and way to much water have not helped.

Christmas day and the day after saw a bunch of Mallards. Could have limited out if we were a little better at shooting. Hunted the last few days and not much going on at all. Seen a bunch of high flyers, but none workable. Today, 2 Jan, didn’t see much at all until about 8.00am. Only had two groups actually work and come in the hole. It is too freakin warm to be in the pit. Had mosquitos tearing us up the other day. So far this season is kinda blowing. Really do need a big artic blast to push these jokers down. The few mallards we killed were new birds. Feet were bright orange. Sure hope it gets better. Only four weeks left.

I hunted friday, saturday, sunday, monday.Friday the big rains started killed 3 greenheads before rain. When it started pouring we left.Saturday wasn’t any better either.Sunday when skies cleared went to timber after over sleeping and killed 2 limits of mallards and gadwalls.Monday 1 greenhead and snow goose.

We need weather up north these birds are educated to the max.We have been shooting the same birds for weeks now.

They never post an accurate migration report here. All I have heard all spring and early fall was we have 15% more ducks this year than last year. This time last year was much better than this year.

Thre refuges up North pour out grain for the ducks and geese to eat so they want come south.Believe me when I say that USFWS (DON’T) want you to kill any ducks. They screw us southern guys every year. They are our ducks not theirs!!! Im sick and tired of spending thousands for duck season and not seeing any new birds for weeks.

Its time for all of us to stand up and speak out or this will continue for seasons to come.

Hunted Wednesday thru Saturday morning until we were blown off the field by wind and heavy rain. Hunting was fair to good as most of these ducks have seen every spread pattern, robo duck, vortex, jerk cord rig in Mississippi. Not to mention they have been called to death. Killed quality mixed-bag limit on Thursday and Friday. Killed two ducks at first light on Saturday and hauled butt after rain hit.

It is that time of year when they even flare to live ducks.

We are seeing plenty of birds but need a good artic blue front BAD!!! Hopefully we will get more favorable weather this month.
I was swatting flies and bugs this weekend and heard frogs baying and quail whistling.
We have a camillia buch in front of our lodge in full bloom!

Snows, blues, and speck number continue to increase by the minute.

Saturday hunted Panther, did ok. Greys and Mallards. Lots of shooting in the distance though. Scouted for a place to hunt on Sunday. Almost sank the three wheeler but found the birds. 6 hunters limited on Greenheads, Woodies and Greyducks. Lots of new birds flying high and numbers picked up on the refuge. Last 3-4 weeks should get better if you know where to go.

To the Alabama boys with the fancy DU stickers all over their truck. When someone says good morning you might not want to blow him off. I know you guys have been enjoying beating everyone into the hole. That game is over, we know where you’ve been. See ya on Saturday morning at about 2 am.

Pretty nasty day, but gave it a shot anyway. Probably the most ducks I have seen all year. Hunting in a flooded rice field and had over 50 on the hole when I arrived. After settling in the blind, had some mallards working the hole, but while my attention was on them, 5 Mergansers plopped down in the middle. Took one of them out, then two spoon bills and stirred up and hornets nest of ducks with the shots. Lots of low flyers but they seem to be working a hole about 100 yards from me. Probably the most ducks and variety I have seen all year. It was very windy by the way.

Well the reports from our lease in the south delta where rather dismal. Most of the geese have moved north along with a the majority of the ducks. The hot weather we have had along with the fog the last week has limited the birds in our area. Reports from a week and a half ago we have lost most of our birds due to a reverse migration. We do have a few ducks around with a scattering of geese. If we don’t have a strong cold front within the next two weeks our bird numbers shouldn’t rise. Reports that i’ve heard from mahanna and sunflower is a few ducks around but not in any huge numbers. With a small cold front moving in sunday and x-mas we will see if any new birds arrive.

South mississippi has been holding a few ducks but the warm weather has limited birds also. We tried a woodduck hole saturday and shot 5 and a hooded. We had over 200 birds two weeks ago but most have moved out. I hope january brings them back!!!!

Hope all are having better hunting than us!!

Until next week good luck and have a great X-mas

Did well in the Delta timber limiting on Mallards and Woodies the first morning, second morning was much slower in the same hole. Moral of that story is: Don’t hunt the same hole twice. We walk and find where the birds go that didn’t come to our spread and bushwhack ’em the next day.

Got to the pit at around 2pm. Had low flying flocks walking in. Group of 4 jumped up out of the hole when walking up. Walked around the decoys and while putting the battery in the mojo, a group of 40 started circling the hole, but I scared them off. Twenty minutes after being in the pit, had a group of 40 cup up and come in. After that, saw a few high flyers with a ton of geese, then at around 3:45pm, not a single thing flying. Even after shooting time, walking out, not the first duck in sight.

Maverick,

Good to hear you had birds. I think that the really cold tolerant and hearty Mallards must move according to shorter daylight hours around the first day of winter, which just came. Gotta be something to it. Maybe a pattern to watch…

Friday we had a great hunt.We limited out on Ducks. We killed over 40 snows, blues. We also had a visit from the Feds on friday checking everybody on our lease. One young kid got a ticket for not signing his federal stamp. The fed wrote him a ticket, took his picture of him.He also took a pic of his gun wrote the serial # down as well.He also took his 3 green heads.

If someone leaves your blind they need to either take their ducks are tag them with name and license information. They also checked several other places in the area. There are 6 USFWS agents in that area at this time.If i were you i would be very careful about everything. Some hunters were still shooting way after 5 pm on Saturday.

Don’t let the warm weather fool ya, there are new birds all over. Right on time according to the log books. I read that birds will migrate based on the decreasing daylight during later winter days. I BWT, Greys and Pintails go first followed by Widgeon. Mallards and divers are usually last. I really do think that regardless of weather, Mallards will migrate after or around Christmas and provide good action the last three weeks of the season, happens all of the time. The birds are more scattered than last year because we have way more water than we had at this time last year so you’ll have to stir your stumps a little more and find them. When you do though you should have pretty good action. Most hunters will not work (walk) enough to find them though. Don’t be one of those guys. Get some exercise, walk around new areas and find some new water! Check the Arkansas reports. For no reason at all, folks are seeing new birds.

I bet if you get out this weekend you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Should be good in the timber.

Good Luck,

Hunted Saturday morning in the timber. Ice everywhere…just as we knew it would be. Got to the hole no problem. Broke the hole open and got set up. Shot woodies till 8:30. No big ducks seen at all. Packed it in and went back to the camp for hot coffee, bacon, eggs and biscuits. Can’t hunt the greentree after 12 so we were done. After listening to the weather for Sunday we figured it would be iced up again as they were calling for 25 degrees over night. We figured we would hunt a ditch where we saw several hundreds the afternoon before do to it was the only thing not frozen. Woke up to find 40 degrees and no ice. SHould have gone back to the timber! Didn’t hear any shots from that way though so I guess we didn’t miss much.

Here is my thought: I am not sure that the weather has as much to do with migration as we think. After looking at our log books, we kill Mallards after Christmas consistently. We’ll kill a few earlier but not on a consistant basis. I think it has more to do with the calendar than the thermometer. Not sure why but that’s just the observation at our club.

Good luck to all, keep posting.

Arctic Blast – 10-20 Degrees – Ice
I hunted friday saturday and sunday.I put out 3 trolling motors Thursday night trying to keep hole open.It still froze about 1.5–2.0 inches thick. We didn’t even see a duck friday morning. It took us until about 11.30am to get a decent hole open.Did manage 4 mallards,2 teal,1 pintail drake late that afternoon.

There were ducks everywhere thursday but I believe most went south or east to the river for the weekend.Decent in the afternoons but the mornings are horrible.Ducks are feeding all night long and sitting on the big water during the daylight hours.

I have never seen as many Snow geese in my life they are thick as thiefs.

Im also looking for the individual that (Stole) 1 Dozen GH Snow floaters and 1 Dozen GH magnum Mallard decoys from my Barn.If anyone hears of it please let me know. They got those plus A dozen more Green head Gear Mallard field decoys also.Plus to stand-up Drake bags.It want happen again because all decoys are under lock and key. These were all Brand New and slightly used my son bought these for my birthday..If I catch you I will make you wish you had never stole anything….REWARD OFFERED!!!! For Information

Starting to see new birds daily. More and more of a mixed bag starting to show up, should lead to a good weekend

dhkid, I think big drake is referring to using PM’s or a message board if you two want to converse back and forth. No hard feeling or anything, just keeping the field reports for ducks

New birds continue to filter in to the Delta. Best concentration continues to be Morgan’s and Matthew’s Brake. Three limits of Fats and a few Greys thrown in as good measure last weekend.

the nice thing about the waterfowler.com is that there is the ablity to private message between member.

It wild be nice of “duck hunter kid” and “coldkiller” would start use the private message service and not the report area to chat with each other.

Hunted Sat am and saw fewer ducks than we saw last week. managed to get our limits. mixed bag of teal, mallards, pates, and gaddies. I have never seen so many geese.

Saturday afternoon the mallards (new birds) started showing up and we had a great mallard shoot on Sunday. We got our mallards limit in 45 minutes. Saw lots of new birds.

I am a Louisiana VFE but I hunted the north MS area this past weekend. The front had just arrived into the Tunica area Friday evening and when we hit the blinds Sat morning, it was 24 degrees. We shot 10 ducks and 6 gesse in the morning. Then went back out in the pm to try and shoot some more geese.

Lots and lots of gesse (specks and snows) are down. We hunted Sunday morning and shot 18 ducks and 3 gesse (4 guns). We missed at least that many more. We saw more and more birds arriving with the front and certainly we expected to have even more birds behind or near the back of the front.

It was a good hunt and and great people in this area.

Thanks

only hunted sunday and i went with bro-inlaw to his field lease. 4 adults 1 kid shot 12 teal 1 canda and 1 speck. the wind was so strong it made it hard to work ducks and once they found a place to land they stayed put. does anyone have any info on the river between marks and crowder. I saw boat ramps at both places and was curious if there is any places to hunt on it. not a lot of posting for ms so far this year

Well hunted for snow geese on the last day of the conservation season on friday. We had a ton of birds moving in on the cold front that hit the midwest. All the birds where high but we managed to scratch out a few. We tried to film with the mississippi outdoors which we needed a few more kills on film. Looks like we might have to wait till the next conservation season to finish up that project. Anyways if we could have used a electronic caller on saturday we would have had a great film. Lots of birds low on both saturday and sunday.

Saturday we tried to hunt a few ducks. We shot some teal and woodducks with a few scaup thrown in. Tamale tom and little robert showed up for a afternoon hunt and we tried our luck on some catfish ponds. We shot a variety of birds from scaup to hooded mergansers. By the way i did shoot a hooded that was banded. Haven’t heard of a hooded being banded but i guess by the conversation i had with the 1 800 bird band lady that a small number of hooded’s are banded each year. Anyways tamale tom hunted mahanna and managed to kill some gadwall and mallards with a couple woodducks. The birds were not their like the opening weekend but if you could find a hole that wasn’t pressured you could find a few. Doug and drew the alabama duck slayers did kill some mallards and teal with a couple of gadwall at mahanna also.

Sunday we sat up on our lease and managed to kill gadwall and teal. It looked like more birds are arriving. Tamale tom and crew and also doug and drew killed a few again at mahanna but there was not many birds around and most birds were killed later in the morning.

All in all ducks continue to build in the south delta. Snow goose numbers continue to rise along with specks. I think within a couple of weeks we should have good numbers of all waterfowl in the region. It looks like the temp’s should remain cooler this week with lows in the 30’s for the rest of the week.

I hope all had a great weekend. We ended up with a good shoot each day but not a great shoot. Total bird numbers for the lease where 35.

One last note i took Lane and his son on their first duck and goose hunts. Tyler lane’s son killed his first goose ever a eagle headed blue goose which he’s going to put on the wall, lane also killed a really nice hooded drake merganser which he’s going to do the same with. You never get enough of introducing someone into waterfowl hunting. They are allready looking forward to trying it again.

Look forward to everyone’s posting keep it up!!!

Hunted Saturday and Sunday. Saw good numbers of ducks but conditions were so flat it was hard to get them on the deck. Killed 15 ducks Saturday and 16 ducks on Sunday. Mixed bag of mallards, gadwalls, gw teal, pintails, and shovelers. Killed several snows and specks.

The snows are here in mass. I saw one field that must have held 25,000+.

The cold front coming through the midwest should help move some new ducks into the Delta.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Friday- we hunted mahanna and shot a assortment of ducks. We should have limited out but there was a ton of people. Someone started the shooting about 20 minutes early and the ducks where up and moving out. We had some good groups of teal and gadwalls that worked. We shot some teal and shovelers and gadwall but were limited due to the pressure. My son did however kill a canada goose. Fridays totals 9 ducks and 1 goose.

Saturday brought promise only to end with 7 ducks. We shot a drake redhead and woodducks and a few odd balls. We didn’t hunt mahanna saturday due to all the pressure on friday. From what i’ve heard it was less pressured on saturday. A couple of guys from our lease limited out on mallards and gadwall and shovlers on saturday at mahanna.

Sunday we set up on a hole and managed a shoveler and a couple of scaup in the morning and decided to hunt a small hole mid morning and shot a couple of mallards. No geese around at all and very little duck movement. Later in the afternoon we decided to try a woodduck hole and managed a couple. Sunday eve we hunted some catfish ponds that we saw some big ducks on. We flushed out the big ducks and only had a redhead and a couple more scaup return along with a couple hooded. We ended up with 8 ducks on sunday.

As for mahanna make sure to watch where you hunt. Also little robert got shot by someone saturday and i would recommend to use safety glasses when hunting there until it gets lite enough for everyone to see you.

I would guess that mahanna held about 30,000 ducks on friday and a few less saturday. The ducks where a little more skittish on satuday and then again sunday from reports that i’ve heard. Although most had good shooting.

Looks like this weekend that we have a cold front moving in. Maybe this will give us a good push of ducks and geese.

Hope everyone had a safe and fun opening weekend and look forward to everyone’s posts

There were more ducks in the area 3 weeks ago.It was a horrible opener.Very few ducks in the air on all days.Geese flying but can’t find them on the ground anywhere. We have lost most of our birds either going back north or south. We need a major push because there are no birds anywhere in the area.

It was a perfect day to be out just not a lot of ducks around. Mudlake is not acessible by a normal boat however a go-devil might get you back there. Fri. am my son, nephew and I shot 7 buffleheads but should have gotten twice that many good fun and lots of shooting. Sat. am tried a so called better spot and got skunked went home early for breakfast. Not the best opening weekend but it is good to be back out hunting!!!!

south delta region 11-20-2006 10:09
Sunny & Clear, High Winds – 50-60 Degrees
Strong north winds have pushed new birds into the south delta. Tamale tom and son tried some goose hunting with no avail. They did see good numbers of snows and blues along with some specks. Very few ducks where seen in the air but a good push of geese has arrived. On sunday Deadly Danny put out a small spead of decoys and shot 4 geese. He was putting the finishing touches on the blind and had quite a few geese work him. He did see a few flocks of ducks but most where high and migrating south. Most of the state hunting area’s have good duck numbers in them which should provide some great opening morning shoots.

Hattiesburg area has seen a increse of woodducks and a few mallards and gadwall over the weekend. We usually don’t see any mallards this far south for about another 3 weeks.

From what i’ve heard that a large migration has left the upper midwest although some stopped a little short of us a good number has made it south. It looks as though the opener should be great.

Until my next post

Deer hunted over the weekend in Natchez, quite distracting in the stand with a steady stream of snows over head. Stopped by the duck camp on the way home to check water levels and glass a few fields. Decent number of ducks around, still need more. Skies filled with more snows though.

Quite a few ducks seem to be moving in, along with some geese. Mahanna is full of birds as i write this and looks to be the hot spot of the opening weekend. I had a buddy that is deer hunting there and said he cant hear from all the noise being made from the ducks!!!! Friday we will be able to finally start. Maybe another front will move even more birds into the region. I have also heard good reports from tunica south. The hattiesburg south mississippi region has seen a increase in woodducks along with some gray’s and teal. It looks like this could be a banner year like 99 if all holds on. With ample water in most of the state and birds allready in place. I hope all have a safe and fun opener. Remember that ducks and all geese are open for three days after thanksgiving then they close the week after of which only snow geese will able to be harvested. The dates for the snow goose conservation season will be Nov. 27th till friday Dec. 1st. Remember to get your snowgoose conservation number also to participate in this event. It can be gotten from the wildlife fisheries and parks. Also you are permitted to use electronic callers and unplugged guns during this special season. On Dec. 2 & 3rd the duck season will open again and close on sunset of Dec. 3rd. It will be closed until Dec. 5th when it open till the last weekend of January.

Hope everyone continues to post and lets have a great year!!!!
