Cloudy, Accumulating Snow – 25-30 Degrees – Open Water
Good bird movement all day long. Were able to decoy multiple groups of 15 to 20 mallards throughout the day. Today was the most favorable hunting conditions of this season. Plenty of migrator birds in the area now. All of the mallards we took today were stuffed with corn. If you’re going to do it, now is the time.

Lotsa’ birds all over the river, rafted up in big groups. Nothing to really get them moving, so the action is pretty slow all day. Will take some wind to get them up and moving around. We did find a cornfield that the birds were hitting hard and had a good shoot.

I have been out a few times and the birds are in. There is a lot of ducks and geese around the area. The big problem is being able to hunt them. Seee hundreds of geese out in middleton and star, every day on my way to work. I have talked to quit a bit of people saying that anywhere you can find open water that isnt big like a lake, has birds using it. Other people are saying the boisae is doing pretty good around star and middleton.

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 30-34 Degrees – Open Water
Had a little activity just before and right at shooting hours in the morning. About 1-hour into the day, a group of migrator mallards, numbered in the 100’s descended on our spread. Never seen anything like it in recent times. We were literally covered up by mallards. Another group of 3 hunters downstream of us, bagged 16 mallards and filled out the balance of their bag with wigeons. By 9:30 AM it was all over. Nothing more flying.

Lots of birds moved in. Shot some this morning. Not very many mallards for this time of year. Lots of widgeon and goldeneye though. Its taking lots of decoys to get them to come in. Talked to a few people and the were saying the same thing.

There seems to be a few birds on the river, but nothing much moving around. Were able to decoy a couple groups of wigeons and a couple small groups of mallards. The mallards were young birds, probably locals, that still had some juvenile coloring and feathers. We need some weather, preferably with wind to get the birds moving.

Lots of people killing ducks. Havent really heard much on geese, but there are lots around. The rivers are doing good as well as some small pasture ponds too.

Not alot of birds in the area. I have been out a few times and have killed a few birds but not much flying around. Been talking to lots of people saying the same thing. I think its still a little early for the big migrants to be coming down. I have noticed alot more snows this year than I have in the past few years. Canada geese are slowly coming in. I have noticed a few more birds around that there was a week ago or so. But it still is early for them too. I have heard alot about lots of widgeon in the area. From what i have studied, Usually when the widgeon really start coming in, the rest of the birds are not that far from being here.

Just an fyi, opening day was fair and not as good as last year at least for me. However there were some that did well further up into the river itself.

I hunted two weeks after opener and did a little better with the birds working the dec’s and call much better. Could use a fresh batch of birds though. I hear Wigeon but can’t get them down, mallards make up most of my bag with occasional Gads and teal mixed in.
