Questions for Gundog 01-07-2005 23:59

Gundog, My name is Mark Burlington, I currently live in Washington State. I am retirering from the Navy, and have spent a time working out at the base in Fallon over the past 20 years. I am a avid hunter, like yourself and am looking into several jobs in the Fallon area. I am also a member of WWA (washington waterfowlers Assoc) and a field editor for the web site. I have four labs and two english pointers, two of which were the mid atlantic region shoot to retrieve champions 98/99. I love to hunt and train dogs in my spare time. Can you tell me about the duck hunting in Fallon. Stillwater and so on. Would you recommend a move. I ask this because hunting is a very important part of my life. I can not live in a place without DUCKS. Thanks for your time.

If the ducks get through your spread with out you noticing, do they really exist, or are you just getting old?

Decided to see if we could get some geese along the Carson River, we never found any birds on huntable stretches of the river, lots of birds on private “No Hunting” streches.

I was wondering, does anybody know who the geniuses were that sold all of the land along our rivers to the “No Hunting-No Trespassing” land owners? Why dont we have any access to our rivers? We stopped and asked and were told “no not ever”.

I might not give my money to Nevada next year, I know alot of people who dont even buy a hunting license in Nevada any more. If it werent for chukar and Quail I might quit hunting in Nevada all together my self. Instead of putting my money and time into triing to find some ducks and geese, I think it would be worth it to take a trip to Manitoba or Mexico and fill my freezer full of meat and fire more rounds in one weekend than I do in three seasons. Who am I kidding if I could afford to hunt any where else, I wouldnt be writting this. LOL. I always get frustrated this time of year, too much ice and not enough birds, well thats waterfowling Nevada Style.

The best shotgun in the world is just wall decoration when the birds are gone.

Someone please post and tell me they got their limit over the weekend, so that I have some hope that the season is not over with.

In the spirit of a typical secretive hunter, Valmy is between Mallard Marsh and Pintail Peninsula. Actually, it is about 15 miles NW of Battle Mountain, on the Humboldt River.

Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 10-20 Degrees – Ice
First real good shoot of the year. Lots of mallards arrived prior to last weekend with the cold weather. Excellent mid afternoon shoot on 12/4, bagging 7 greenheads in about 90 minutes. Ducks desperately looking for water, and the ice was very thick and tough to break.

Mostly Sunny, No Precipitation – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Cold. That is the word of the morning. We arrived at nutgrass at 5:30 and set up 18 bigfoots and put out 5 mallards. The bigfoots we put on the edge of the ice, half of them with there feet on and the other half without. On the duck decoys we pounded a piece of bamboo stake into the mud with a bungee cord connected to it and the decoys, it made a lot of motion and worked like a champ. Hunted until 11:00 and ended up with an easy limit of geese, and 5 ducks, (4 green wing teal and a drake mallard). The birds were not very smart and it looks like it will be promising over the weekend. Good luck, and be careful on the ice and in the mud.
