Statewide notes and Carson Lake 01-25-2005 11:44
Cloudy, Heavy Fog – 30-34 Degrees – Ice
Hunters in Nevada need to be aware that there is a move afoot by the FWS and several states to make some significant changes in the Hunting season frameworks. They want to drop the season length by 15% (91-days)even in the best years and drop the limit by 1 bird. Neather of which has been biologically proven to help the birds – “just preception”. If you would rather have the longer season and the opportunity to hunt when the birds are available, you need to make your wishes known.

I just finished flying my last statwide survey for Nevada in January, and inspite of the cold, fog, and poor hunter success. the count was above last year. Good numbers of birds in the south. Statwide I counted 67,000 ducks and 17,000+ geese this January, compared to 56,000 and 20,000 last year. I will still be flying for the FWS and other states next year, but not Nevada. Kyle Neill will be taking over Nevada surveys(Dec.- May).

I am about ready to finalize the data from Carson Lake (Greenhead Club) and it appears that the number of hunters and ducks taken this year was the lowest since 1994. The average birds per hunter day was just about in the middle of the last 11 years, so not as bad as many supposed.

I had a good year with some limits and some real bummers. Did much better at Carson Lake than Stillwater, except for swans. We took five at Stillwater for 100% success everytime we tried. My contacts in other states reported the same slower season except for California wher my contact had one of his best seasons and I did well the one time I went over.

LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT SEASON ALREADY.

Carson City 01-13-2005 10:38
Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – 0-10 Degrees – Open Water
If I could shoot in the city limits I could have limited out in about three shots this morning. Hundreds of greenheads in the thermal ponds off of College Parkway, behind my office, I was pratcticing my calling this morning, as wave after wave of Mallards were comming in. I think these birds came off of Washoe when it froze, I dont think they migrated down. These are resident birds that never get shot at because they belong to the No-Hunting water-ways club, but it is sure fun to watch them set their wings and come in.

I called GH yeaterday and they said that only one goose has been taken in the last two weeks, no other birds have been taken.

I hunted the Truckee last weekend, there are a few birds but access is terrible. We lost a Gadwall because of the snow but we shot seven Quail, so it wasnt a complete bust. Some of the snow drifts along the river were over three feet, it was too hard on my dog to get up and down the banks.

I am thinking of hunting the river again tomorrow, all these mallards have gotten me longing for some action!

Nevada is a good state for hunting, you just have to put your time and money into it.

Fallon is is our best area for duck hunting but we are in our eighth year of drought. We have been getting above average snowfall for the past month so mabey things are looking up finnally.

In a good year all areas produce birds, in bad years you have to find water and feed.

Ive shot birds on all of the northern hunt areas except Scripps, my favorite is Toulon but I havent hunted it in three years, no water. Greenhead in Fallon has been the best place to get ducks for the past four years, its been the only place with water.

You will need a small boat with an electric motor for early season then a mud motor from the middle of November on. You can hunt without a boat but its fun to explore and get away from everyone. Next year I am getting some type of canoe and kayak, small and mobil.

Chukar is king in Nevada, I am an upland hunter, who would like to be a duck hunter.

You can hunt Quail, Chukar, Sagehen, Huns, Ducks and Geese all in the same day.

Two years ago I shot, two Huns, Two Quail, two Chukar and a Drake Shoveler on opening day. The next day we went out to GH and I shot three more ducks.

This year was the worst year I have had for ducks with only five for the year. However it has been my best year for Chukar with 15 in the first two weeks and I have shot over 20 quail. No geese this year they are all in town.

Hope this helps, good luck.
