I agree with Jack on the Rocks – Steptoe should be great when completed. DU was looking for a completion date in early spring, but the contractor is behind schedule. We have been waiting since then for NDOW to give the approval for a dedication of the marsh, but still not there yet due to the delays. Nevertheless, Steptoe will be a well engineered set of nine ponds, surrounded by associated wetlands and grassland. With the larger reservoir to the south, should provide excellent hunting opportunities, though it may take another year for all of the emergent vegetation to mature and provide the habitat we expect. Should produce lots of ducks in the spring and summer, due to the excellent cover. DU is also putting new efforts into the Ruby Marshes to create better water management so we can periodically dry up and flood portions of the marsh only Mother Nature has had control over. Without that control, that marsh will not produce the duck food that it is capable of producing.
Thanks for the good thoughts on Ducks Unlimited – it is always nice to hear others support the organization that I feel so passionately about. I serve as a Regional Vice President and I am on the Board of Directors, so if anyone has questions or needs information from DU, please let me know.

Thanks nvchukar for the information on mason valley. All I heard were rumors about the project. I was just wondering if anyone had any good news on what they are planning. I will give Mark a call.

To respond to Desert Ducks about the Mason Valley project. DU is paying for the project with many partners. The total outlay is $3 million. For particulars, you can contact Virginia Getz, DU biologist for Western Nevada, or Mark Biddlecomb, Director of Conservation for the Western Regional Office (WRO) of DU. Both work out of the WRO in Rancho Cordova, California. If you need their contact information, please let me know, or I can find out any specific information for you by letting me know what you need.
