Anybody been scouting the great NW yet? Haven’t seen too many birds yet, but then again, look at the weather.

Saw a pile of geese in a field last evening just before dark. Probably 300 or so birds. Gotta be new birds. Too bad I couldn’t get after them today with work and all.

Shuylkill River just below Reading 09-15-2007 08:24
Cloudy, Light Rain & Drizzle – Over 70 Degrees
Tried an evening set-up on the river last night with my son.Did not really expect much but I figured it would be a good time to scout for the youth day hunt with my twelve year old daughter. Well were sitting there shooting the breeze and at around six thirty we notice a bird of some type land several hundred yards upstream. We could not tell what it was at the time and my old eyes just are not what they used to be.A few minutes later my twenty year old son exclaimed in a very excited fashion “Dad, there’s a bald eagle eating something up on the river bank!”Like I said before my eyes just ain’t what they used to be so I got my range finder out to “assist” me a little bit and sure enough, 620 yards up river was a big old mature bald eagle eating something on the river bank. How my kid was able to clearly see it amazes me but this made our night.I’ve seen a few eagles in my day in Alaska, up at Middle creek and twice in Morgantown during the gunning season but I never really figured I would see one on the Schuylkill River.Being with my oldest made it all the more memorable.Once the eagle had his fill and flew off we had a young fox sneaking up river on us.Oh, and as for the geese, we saw about seven total six of which came over as we were walking out after legal shooting hours. Did see about thirty ducks(teal, woodies and mallards)but that was also after hours. “g”

Sunny & Clear, Winds Calm – Over 70 Degrees
Set up in a large oat field last night after noticing 3 flocks land in there the other night. The only concern was the power lines that run through the middle of the field.

Decoys were set and I waited about 30 minutes. First flock came in, circled 3 times, but wouldn’t come in below the power lines. they landed 75 yard to the right. Second flock…same deal. Last group skirted the decoys and were within range. I took two out of that group. Total bird numbers 75-80 combined in all three flocks.

Not seeing much else around other than these three flocks.

Set up in a freshly cut cornfield with captain dennis yesterday morning.Did not see a single goose. It was a nice morning though.I saw a bunch of geese on the river this afternoon around cross keys but they were definitely well within a safety zone.I might try the river tomorrow near the island. How’s everyone else making out? “G”
