Pool 13 Mississippi River-Nothern Illinois 12-03-2008 13:28

Just a report from a former Georgia hunter. Moved to Northern Illinois to be near the upper Mississippi River Refuge and all of the great hunting.

Incredible numbers of Canadas and puddle ducks. Filled out by 8:15 on both. Four mallard drakes and two gadwalls, and a limit of geese. Chewy and I just sat and watched the show for a couple more hours as the birds just covered the river. Most of the shallow water is completely frozen, including the refuges, and the open river is the only option unless they go ahead and go south, and there is no indication that is happening yet.

Going back in the morning. Supposed to be 8 degrees and balmy.

You really just need to go grow up in Paducah and now how to call ducks and geese and not just talk about it. Woodsman can do both. He, just like his Dad, the infamous scoudrel of the South, can shoot em in the lips, or the eyes, just which eye do you want shot. Not like these Tennesee boys who just shoot off their mouths.

That water level will change on you in a heart beat. If you get there early enough, launch and you can go out to the rocky point, on left, and set up. Also, all the way back by the rip rap dike, there is a pocket, or marshy area to set up in. The geese will come right over the dike and you can suck them right in.

You have to be early to be a north GA waterfowl guide to get to either of these spots.

Sunny & Clear, Morning Fog – 10-20 Degrees – Open Water
Spent Opening day with friend on Army Corp Lake.

Temps were 15 degrees at boat launch at 5:00 AM

Fair numbers of ducks, though the Geese left early and did not return.

Hunting Pressure from other hunters moderate. Just enough hunterss to keep birds on the move.

Killed Gadwalls, Buffle Heads, Mallards.

Departed Area at 1:00 PM (note) Army Corp of Engineers did three releases of water and water levels raised over 10 Feet from the time we put out our decoys till we left. Was very disruptive as decoys floated free about every 30 minutes, so we picked all Texas Rig sets and left the long line out with Mojo Mallard, it worked well.

Kendall- If you really need coot blocks, I have found them in N.W. Illinois. I am actively putting together diving decoys for the upper Mississippi hunts on Iowa border, Plan on using coots as confidence decoys. Will be able to use divers in Manitoba

Never thought I would have to hunt so hard to find a deal on Coot Decoys.

Was successful though and at $19.50 for 1/2 Dozen if those weighted dekes I think I got a deal on them. Was a close out they are not selling them in the future.

Next step, taking inventory tomorrow of all Decoys, repainting them and riggin some Texas Rigs as well as adding some long lines. Will probably need some Canvasbacks for those divers over at Guntersville, other than that we should be good to go..The plan is beginning to take shape , with new 25HP Yamaha motor, Flyway specialties blind is on the boat, dog is working good on blind retrieves at Lake Lanier.

Well, we didn’t duck hunt but we sure caught a lot of Crappie a few weeks ago. Mike thanks for a great time and we will see you for that Combo Goose and Dove Hunt in Sept.

The HRC Grand was held end of April at Brnt Pine. Three of our Offspring passed it;
7xGRHRCH UH Yukon’s Dynamite Drake MH got his 7th Grand pass in a row a FIRST.

HRCH Big Black Dude II was his first time out and just turned 2 yrs old on 4/17/08 got his FIRST Grand Champion Pass and then turned around the next weekend and Won a Club Trial at Cooper Black in SC. He is progeny of Yukon’s Big Boss Man.

HRCH Days End Confederate Rebel MH, Rebel got his FIRST Grand Champion pass.

Congratulations to all of you, from the old Matador of them all HRCH Sundee’s Yukon Jack MH; the force is strong in these dogs and you proved it and nobody can take that away from you.

Just posting a message to my friends and
others. I am in the process of relocating to
Northern Illinois. I will be in some of the best goose hunting and duck hunting in the midwest. I have set up to be able to work in Canada on an as needed basis, which will allow me free access to hunt without the aid of a resident. I will be doing some
commercial hunting on a limited basis.

I would encourage all that wish to email me
if you like. I will be spending a lot of time from late august until january hunting waterfowl and upland birds.

My two incredible dogs, Chewbacca and Chase
are making the move with me, and I look forward to getting the little yellow dog on
upland birds, since she has turned out to be a naturally endowned pointing lab.

She is a far cry from some of her lesser
relatives.

Hunted a private hole about 10 min from lake guntersville last sun morning 4 guys killed 19 mostly mallards with some gaddies. Hunted in missouri the rest of the week saw an ungodly amount of birds until the weekend came and it froze everything up. Killed pintails mallards speks weigon and of course a handful of spoonies.

Goose Limits taken at the Corn Field again this morning we really had the set up right this time.
Started snowing at end and as we picked up decoys and took photos. Geese still coming in and the botom dropped out as we drove off in the truck.

Private Property hunt, Had good Goose shoot with several flocks of Geese that were wary. Area was cut corn field in river bottom.

Poor concealment and lack of being ready caused us to kill only five when we should have had 10 to 15.

Went with two GA Gents to hunt Guntersville area. Met up with some other GA Gents and a Preacher man from Huntsville.

Went to his Canvasback Honey Hole and enjoyed a good shoot on them. See photo I posted on Grip and Grin Bag Limits. 01/13/08.

Meanwhile, here in GA. other GA Gents had great hunts locally north of Alpharetta and Dawsonville with good numbers of Geese, teal and woodducks on small Sloughs. Was a good hunting weekend for all of us from Alpharetta/Roswell area.

went sunday morning. sucked. had a guy push up on me right before shooting light. shined him off and he plopped down less than 100 yards away. i could id his decoys as he threw them out. Then the bass boys hit the water for a tourney i guess. Let early and helped out one of the bass boys who was stuck in about 2-3 inches of water. No shots fired that i heard all morning.

Land owner called to have Geese eliminated. We took three on 01/03 and will go back Saturday to finishe the job.

Lake Windward had many ducks of different species yesterday including Blue Bills, Widgeon, Mallards and a Redhead. Biggest variety of ducks I have ever seen here.

Local swamp off GA 400 12-24-2007 12:27

Went with some buddies to swamp they hunted yesterday morning, near where I live.

I killed a Mallard Drake and a Woodduck. Only saw a few Woody’s, left swamp at 8:00 AM and Scouted another nearby swamp. Saw 8 mallards and two woody’s. Saw several divers on Lake Windward on way back in.

Headed to the SEMO early AM on the 26th will hunt through ehe 29th over there.

hunted xmas eve morn and did not see too much. no divers to speak of on the upper end of the lake. did scratch out one gaddie which i winged and had to chase. not easy in a layout rig by yourself. 7, 3.5 inchers later and he was in the bag. sucker liked to dive. saw one big group of geese headed to the golf course.

Thanksgiving weekend Canada Goose Hunt was very rewarding via invite on private property with pond and field Geese were coming into.

Will have Roast Canada Goose for Christmas dinner now.

Scouted two spots this am, several nice flocks still coming into the corn field right on time. Am getting their timing down and working on duck blinds and decoys

The first split was a downer for me. Only got to go a couple of times and saw very few birds. couple of missed shots sealed the deal. of course is was kind of hard to get in the grove of things when you are sitting in a blind and it is 70 degrees. hope some cold weather comes are way soon.

Scouting proved to be rewarding. Located nice flock of Canadas with a couple of Snows in Cut Corn field.

Got permission to hunt it via discussions with GA DNR. Will try and save this one for second split opener on the 8th.

Will advise closer proximity of the area once we hunt it. Think I am going to get the dust off the big foot decoys for this one, its going to be a dandy.

Hunted with just my dog this morning- had 3 merg come in and I got one, busted 2 mallards out of 3, and killed 1 lonely goose who somehow fell from the sky. Total for today was 4. Crash made all the retrieves which made it all worth while…

set up for geese in a large farm pond then went and shoot some woodies before the geese got out there. Turns out the geese never did come but did kill 3 red heads. the end of the day saw around 15 geese 100+ woodies a group of about 10 hoodies and 3 red heads.
Tues. am
Worst morning yet saw 5 woodies and heard some mallards before they got off roost. But the crows were flying well killed 5 of them and no ducks.

I have been hunting out of my Momarsh layout
boat since opening day, and have had great
success on L. Hartwell and on Alatoona.

Shooting mixed bags of mallards, gadwalls, and widgeon.

My big problem is I cannot get out to the
deep water places that I want to hunt because I cannot handle my big boat alone
setting and picking up blocks, and I have no
one to help me with the boat, so I am shooting out of the layout.

I think this is going to be a great year, despite the low water. Dried up potholes are
driving birds to the big water to roost.

Hunted a little farm pond with two other guys. Didnt see many birds around 10 mallards and 20 geese. Killed 5 greenheads and a hen. The geese snuck up on us and busted us. Also seen 6 really high UFD(unidentified flying ducks)

Hunted a swamp with some timber was able to take a 5 woodies before legal shooting was up and after that we just stood at ahh watching the evening flights come into roost. saw in all 150-200 woodies few mallards.

Guided at Skeeter Branch located of 77 south of I-85.

Saw good many woodducks a teal and some Ringnecks. Not shootable but nice to see them.

SW of us was a lot of shooting on a private swamp, somebody was having a very good day up there. Also, owner of Skeeter Branch noticed Pintails and GAdwalls on SC property near Hartwell so we are getting migration in here.

I officailly have the fever i watched one of my holes this morning and in the first 20 min of shooting hours there were 100+ woodies around 20 mallards and group of about 50 geese came puring in. After swung by another hole that i hunt and there were 30 geese and a few ducks that have done beat me there. Going scouting the rest of the week, hope everyone else has birds for opening morning

Well, well look what the North West winds brought in.

This AM while giving my dogs some retrieves at Two Mile Creek I spotted the first Loons to arrive in the area.

Also noted several more Mallards than normal. Lake Windward had some new birds on it, looked like Divers.

AS A RULE OF THUMB NO MATTER WHAT THE WEATHER CONDITIONS DUCKS AND GEESE ARRIVE IN THIS AREA AROUND THE 15TH. OF OCTOBER. THE WARM WEATHER MUST A HAVE BACKED THEM UP A FEW DAY’S. WE HAVE HAD ALOT OF BIRDS ARRIVE THIS WEEK STARTING MONDAY THE 22ND.
WIDE VARIETY OF DUCKS, SNOWS AND WHITE FRONTED GEESE. IT RAINED THE FIRST DAY OF OCTOBER SO AS THE OLD SAYING GOES WE ARE ON TRACK TO GET 15 DAYS OF RAIN THIS MONTH.
CACHE RIVER, BAYOU DEVIEW AND SOURROUNDING AREAS SHOULD BE VERY GOOD OPENIONG WEEK!!!

drove by a pond in north cherokee early yesterday morning and it was literally covered with geese. must have been a solid 75-100. biggest concentration of birds i have seen yet this year.

Some hunting buddies have been seeing some concentrations of resident birds
on several North and West Georgia lakes.

They are starting to get some concentrations
of puddle ducks in the bean and rice fields in Central Arkansas. Planning a week of fun there.

Conditions are great in the Dakotas right now, and some good flights of Snows, Specs,
and Canadas are starting to filter in with
some smaller flights of puddle ducks.

Done some early season goose hunting. Been tracking these geese for a few weeks. Hunted a 500 acre brown millet field with layout blinds and about 4 dz field dekes.
had groups of 35-50 coming in. total of over 300 all morning.

Got in a “last day of the season” teal hunt this afternoon. Four of us (including my 11 year-old son) scratched down 15 blue wings in a planted pond. I whiffed on the first three but finally caught up to them and got my limit of four pretty quickly. I can’t wait for the real season to get here!

Went deer hunting Saturday morning and didn’t have any luck. Came out in time to get to a good resting spot where MEaler and myself busted 5 geese.

Took the refurbished duck boat out on the water this weekend to check things out. Got all excited about doing some early goose on the lake until the motor quit. Oh well. better now than during the real season on opening morning.

Don’t get that way very often. I know that allatoona is covered up with resident mallards it seems this year. the local ponds seem to have a whole bunch of resident geese as well. Just whether they will leave and be huntable is the questions

Saw my first group of bluewings on a local pond here in cherokee co. It was a small group but it got the juices flowing again for ducks. it won’t be long until early season.

Had a work weekedn at the marsh this past weekend. Planted 6 acres and built 4 new blinds. Things are looking good. Just hope the rain comes back along with some cold weather this fall. We’ve done our part it’s just up to mother nature now.
